Arson at Tesco Extra - Pinchington Lane Newbury


Thames Valley Police has released CCTV images of a man officers would like to speak to following an arson in Newbury.

At around 3am on 5th January an offender attempted unsuccessfully to set fire to some newspapers at a petrol station in Pinchington Lane, Greenham.

The same offender then set fire to stock that was on display within the main entrance of a nearby Tesco store, causing significant damage.

The store was closed at the time of the incident with some night staff on duty.  No one was injured during the incident.

Officers are keen to speak to the man shown in this CCTV image.

Sgt Warren Craik, of Newbury Local Area CID, said: "I am appealing for anyone with any information about this incident or anyone who saw what happened to contact police.

"If you saw anyone acting suspiciously at the time of the incident please phone our non-emergency number."

Thames Valley Police has charged a man in connection with this arson in Newbury.

Matthew Hillier, aged 20, of Montague Drive, Greenham, was charged with one count of arson with intent / reckless as to whether life was endangered and one count of non-dwelling burglary.

The charges relate to an incident at Tesco in Pinchington Lane, Newbury, on 5 January in which car foam and a car spray were stolen and where an arson took place in the front lobby of the store.

Hillier was bailed to appear at Newbury Magistrates' Court today 20th February
