Saturday 22nd March 2014

Newbury Choral Society present Sacred Music through the Ages: A Guided Tour. Douai Abbey Woolhampton Sat 22 Mar 7.45pm

In our 130th anniversary year, Newbury Choral Society looks back at six centuries of sacred music written for Christian worship. Conductor Cathal Garvey will take you on a guided tour while you listen to works by some of the most important composers in each period, in the tranquil setting for which they were written.

Your tour begins in the Renaissance era with the development of harmony by the most influential Italian composers, and takes in the Baroque period with Bach in Germany and Purcell in England. You will experience the energy and clarity of the classical period in the music of Mozart and Haydn; savour the emotions of the Romantic period; and discover how modern composers have been influenced by this wealth of musical history.

Internationally known soprano Janet Coxwell will perform solos including Pie Jesu from Fauré's Requiem and Mozart's Laudate Dominum, and we will be joined by a professional string quartet.
