Just a thought, prompted by this interesting post; what about erecting a similar monument which commemorates the second battle?  That could have a Parliamentary bias and so balance the local sentiments.  Possible site at the junction of Kiln Road and Pear Tree Lane which was possibly the southern edge of the Parliamentary camp.

It's called competition, of course you have to shop around; we live in a capitalist society.  There is an alternative,  all the prices are the same, mother you don't have to shop around; that's called communism.

Sadly, I'd have to agree with you!  It's pretty pointless doing anything much round here, because some of the locals are just intent in turning it into to a slum.  For instance, there is a nice riverside walk, along the Lambourn from the new houses where it looks as if the refuse lorry delivers!

Quite easy, particularly if it was going to replace a pre war shed....

Be careful what we wish for!  Let's just pray that we don't end up like the Royal Berks.  Transport to and from there is truly discriminatory.  You are ok if you live in Reading and it's immediate environs, but heaven help you if you come from round here.  Car, public transport of taxi....talk about stealth tax, this is stealth NI contributions!

It's the right of way which is much more important.  The physical ownership would doubtless be far too hard to sort, but right of way, not too difficult.  After all, that's all we need!  Let someone else maintain the passage, so long as we have free unfettered access.  What happens to the Town Council's approved motion next?  Does it really mean that the Unitary Authority will simply ignore the majority wish just because of a few die hard place men?
142
That sounds like a fault then.  Has it been reported to the District Council and if so, what's the response.  It shouldn't be up to motorists to risk a conviction simply to try and rectify technical errors - particularly as this seems to have gone on for a while.  It's even worse that taxi drivers, who are actually licensed by the Council, are pulling out to try and do the same.  Arguably, not a safe move!  So again, the real answer is tell the Council.
143
Have to say, wholly disagree!  I suppose it is 'in the eye of the beholder', but to my mind what has been put up is far more attractive than what went before.  It does pull the two historic buildings together - without intruding itself.  At last, we have something worthy of the Town!

I wholly agree that Parkway is a tremendous asset to the town and it is probably one of the best modern developments anywhere in UK over past few years.  Retaining the 'right of way' should have made absolutely no difference to the private management if the environment, that could have been sorted quite easily by the legal people.  It might seem a small detail, but retaining these things even if in trust, by the public authority is necessary to our democratic way of life.
145
It is rather odd that the subtle consequences of the Council's agreement with the developers of Parkway were just slid through.  Ironically, perhaps we should be grateful for the over zealous jobsworths that stopped the filming - otherwise this might have taken years to emerge.  Frankly, it's a very sad reflection on the state of our democracy; one wonders what other arrangements they slipped through simply for bureaucratic convenience.  The local politicians are at pains to suggest that the cosy coalition exists only in Westminster, the silence of the opposition on WBC suggests otherwise.
146
Apparently we have a really good case, so why so much procrastination?  Put up or shut up, after all as they are going to win, the Council has nothing to loose.  This constant delay is boring!
147
What would you rather have?  Another charity shop or an estate agent?  If retailers really did think there was  a viable market in town centre, then we'd have far more choice.  As it is, we prefer to shop in one of the big supermarkets or Aldi; so we reap what we sow.

You naughty boy Administrator!

.....look at the content list, the heading says Fire at Travelodge.....Started by Administrator.  (Well I thought it was funny!)

Thanks for that.  I have to say this facility is much much better than the old one.  Added to which the staff are friendly; on two visits they've helped me unload awkward items.  Similarly, although I've been at peak times, I did queue, but never for long.

It's an odd name for a resurfacing project which doesn't bode well for the future.  With the growth in the Newbury area, there is now an overwhelming need for an adequate route to Basingstoke.  Surely, rather than simply patching and making good, wholesale redevelopment is long overdue?
