Tosca at Newbury Racecourse - Saturday 12th July 2014

Greenham Common Trust is delighted to announce the return of Britain's leading outdoor opera company Opera Brava and Southern Sinfonia to Newbury Racecourse in 2014. A fabulous evening of world class opera.

Greenham Common Trust in partnership with Opera Brava will be hosting their sixth opera together - Tosca by Puccini - a heart wrenching tale of love, betrayal and murder.

Tosca is set in Rome during the Napoleonic Wars at the turn of the 19th Century. The malevolent villain, Baron Scarpia, Chief of Police, ruthlessly pursues and tortures enemies of the state. Excaped political prisoner Cesare Angelotti, a supporter of Bonaparte's invasion, takes refuge in his friend the painter Mario Carvadossi's villa. Here they try and hatch a plan for Angelotti to escape from Rome. Meanwhile, the singer Floria Tosca mistakenly believes her lover Cavaradossi is having an affair and is tricked into revenge by the evil Scarpia.

The open air performance of Tosca will be staged in front of the Grandstand at Newbury Racecourse.

Guests are very welcome to bring their own chairs and picnics to the event or sit on the grandstand steps or the artificial grass and picnic tables provided.

A licensed bar will be available on the first floor of the grandstand which will be open from 6pm when the gates open.
